The first recorded seller of the land which now houses Kvarteret Sillen was
King Gustav Vasa who founded Ekenäs in 1546. In the centuries since, the
plot has housed, amongst other uses, a school, a pub, municipal offices, day care for the elderly, a herring market and various domestic homes.
Funded by the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, we are collating a history of the land and the people who have lived, worked and played here. A public exhibition displays photographs and artefacts and our staff are keen to hear your recollections to add to our memory bank.
The
exhibition is open during cafe opening hours (Saturday 18th June to
Sunday 28th August, Tuesday to Sunday 10am - 7pm, closed Mondays).
